Got Collagen?

We hear the word "collagen" a lot in the skin care and beauty industry. What is it? Why do we need it? How do we maintain what we have? How do we promote collagen?

First, collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body. It is the substance that holds the whole body together and can be found in bones, muscles, skin, and tendons. Collagen plays an important role in the entire body. I will be touching on collagen and your skin.

Facts About Collagen:

  • Collagen gives the skin its strength and elasticity, and also responsible for replacement of dead skin cells.
  • Collagen production typically begins to decline after the age of 40.
  • Cosmetics and creams that claim to increase your collagen by absorption are highly unlikely because collagen molecules are too large to be absorbed.
  • Collagen production can be stimulated through laser therapy, needling treatments, and dermal filler.
  • Collagen is damaged and decreased by too much sun exposure, smoking, and a high sugar and starchy diet.
Why do we need it? Our health depends on it. A break down and decrease of collagen can lead to a number of health problems. Collagen helps repair the body. As for our skin, a decrease in collagen will lead to saggy skin, formation of fine lines and deep wrinkles, and extreme volume loss.

Maintaining your collagen can be done in several ways. Diet and exercise is one way, and avoiding too much sun, smoking, and having good sleep habits is another. The simplest maintenance is regular "exercise for the skin". Exercise for the skin is just as important as the exercise you do for your body. Regular exfoliation and stimulation can be achieved by enzyme masks, vitamin a, retinols, and microdermabrasion facials. Your diet should be low in starchy and sugary food and high in bright produce. Vitamin C supplements are also a good idea. Vit. C is ESSENTIAL for collagen production as well as maintaining a healthy immune system. Avoid over-exposure to the sun, smoking, and be sure to get a good amount of sleep every night.

Collagen promotion can be achieved by the controlled micro-wounding of the skin done by laser therapy, needling treatments, and dermal fillers. A controlled micro-wound will send a signal to the body for repair and healing of that area. This, in turn, will produce collagen to form in that area. The result will be firmer and tighter skin. Dermal filler can also send fibroblasts to the area treated and induce collagen to grow around them. Will you see an increase in volume and plumping of the skin immediately.

Winter Skin Care

As temperatures drop so does the moisture in our skin. Choosing the right skin care to keep that moisture and natural glow with out clogging pores can be tricky.

The first step is to always make sure you are applying those moisturizing products on exfoliated and damp skin. This allows your products to penetrate and not just sit on top and feel heavy. What do I mean by exfoliate and damp skin?

  • Exfoliation should be done by natural and not-so-harsh products. For example, enzymes that come from pineapple or papaya and mild-foaming cleansers. Stay away from harsh scrubs and a lot of chemicals that you can't pronounce. Don't over exfoliate-do this 2-3 times a week.
  • After washing your face, splashing it with water, and gently patting it with a towel; your skin will still feel a little damp. However, a great way to make sure your skin is ready to absorb all products that you apply you can spritz it with a toner. Toner should not be full of alcohol or chemicals because that will just cause your skin to become more dry. Osmosis carries an amazing pH balanced toner water called "CLEAR" that allows your skin to drink up all the product and absorb in for the maximum benefit.
Choose products with "good oils." Some examples of good oils are:

  • Avocado oil
  • Primrose oil
  • Grape Seed oil
  • Almond oil
  • Argan oil
All of these oils are also good for your hair and skin on your entire body!

Lastly, a few key factors that many don't think about when it comes to our skin are hot showers, diet, and exercise. As tempting as a steamy, hot shower may be when its cold outside; the hot temperature will only strip your skin of the "good oils" and more moisture.
Drinking a lot of water and eating fruits and vegetables, and getting frequent exercise will also keep your skin balanced and glowing. Fruits and veggies will be your key source to a lot of your vitamins and antioxidants.

Don't forget your SPF!! Even when its cold and cloudy. A natural SPF is very important for skin protection.

Good Sunscreen vs. Bad Sunscreen: Do you know the difference?

The Importance of Choosing the Right Sunblock!
Unprotected exposure to the sun can lead to many health concerns with skin cancer at the top of the charts. Choosing the right sunblock is not just about the SPF labeled with the highest number (like SPF 85+). In fact, SPF 50 is only a couple percentages away from the 85 or 100. An SPF of 35 is a sufficient amount of protection. What you really need to be watching for are the ingredients. Sunblocks can contain many harmful chemicals that can absorb into the bloodstream and cause more damage.

Physical VS. Chemical Sunblock
Physical (Natural Minerals) are Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide and are low to no toxic concern. Physical sunblocks lay right on top of the skin and reflect the sun's rays, they do not create free radicals, they are safe enough to be found in baby diaper rash cream, and they provide protection immediately.

Some chemicals you may see in sunblock are oxybenzone, homosalate, and octinoxate and have a high toxic concern. The chemicals in sunblock will absorb into the skin and quickly reach the bloodstream, and in turn only work by absorbing sun's rays as well. This may disrupt the hormone system, cause allergic reactions, create free radicals in the body, and you have to wait 20-30 min. before going out to the sun.

Below is a diagram illustrating physical vs. chemical sunblocks for a better understanding.

Gone are the days of sun bathing with our bodies covered in baby oil...

At least 20 min. a day of protected sun exposure can boost our vitamin D and improve our moods!

Over exposure of the sun can could cause our immune system to suffer, cause pigmentation (uneven skin tone), wrinkles, premature aging, and even worse skin cancer.

Thermography vs Mammograms: Facts You Need To Know

Thermography vs. Mammogram:

Facts You Need to Know

Most tumors take years to develop to a size measurable on a mammogram. What is happening in the body during that time the tumor is developing? What is causing this growth? Mammograms cannot provide the same early detection and insight you get from a Thermography screening. Mammograms expose your body to radiation that can be 1,000 times greater than that from a chest x-ray, which poses risks of cancer. Mammography also compresses your breasts tightly, and often painfully, which could lead to a lethal spread of cancerous cells, should there be any present.

Aside from the radiation risks, mammograms carry a first-time false positive rate of up to 6 percent. False positives can lead to expensive repeat screenings and can sometimes result in unnecessary invasive procedures including biopsies and surgeries. Not to mention that women have unnecessarily undergone mastectomies, radiation and chemotherapy after receiving false positives on a mammogram.

And what about IBC (inflammatory breast cancer), a condition most are not familiar with, which has no lumps to see on a mammogram but is just as threatening? Thermography can detect this kind of hidden condition in its earliest stages.

Of the examination techniques used today, regulation Thermography is the only method which gives significant metabolic and vascular phenomena that occurs in breast tissue response. While all other methods mainly explore morphology, Thermography examines the physiology and its regulating mechanisms. More and more clinical studies are showing that an alternative, non-invasive breast cancer screening test - Thermography - could soon become the initial breast screening tool for pre-menopausal women.

Neither mammograms nor Thermography diagnose breast cancer, they are screening tools for early detection. Choose the safer option.

Thermography: Your number one choice in disease prevention & early detection

Lipogenex is your local choice for Thermography screenings in Arizona.
We are among the first clinics to offer Regulation Thermography, not to be confused with Heat Imaging Thermography. Continue reading to learn the difference between the two, and why Regulation Thermography
screenings should be an important part of your health and wellness care.

Check out our new website for details & more information:

Health. Wellness. Prevention.

Thermography is great for men, women and children. Here are some areas of health the Thermography screening tests:

- Adrenal
- Breast
- Thyroid
- Prostate
- Immune
- Digestive
- Uterine/Ovary
- Cardiovascular
- Food Intolerance
- Dental

You will receive a 6 - 8 page color report that will include a consult with Dr. Karampahtsis.

Thermography allows your body to reveal information that measures temperature, a method dating back to 400BC when physicians would use mud on the body to find disease. Technology today, fortunately, has developed use of a temperature sensor device for changes in the body, even before disease may begin.

Our Thermography screening will give you a road-map of your health so you then will have the power to take action with your health.  Both medical and naturopathic doctors love the information from these reports which help guide them in helping you.
This screening should be an important part of your
health and wellness care.
European Regulation Thermography is simply the measurement of heat and provides a whole-body evaluation. These are evaluations that show functional changes happening in the body before those changes become labeled as disease processes, such as lymphatic tissue changes and toxicity, that are indicative of breast health concerns that may be related to cancer or other issues.  Thermography is a safe, no radiationalternative to getting annual mammograms, which can cause more harm then good. Mammograms detect breast health problems such as tumors after they have already began development. Thermography detects abnormalities up to 4 years in advance, BEFORE a tumor has been created in the tissue.

Thermography examines a wider range of tissues, organs and glands due its methodology, and the information is plotted on a graph in order to more accurately detect patterns. Unique benefits of European Regulation Thermography are earlier detection, more comprehensive information and the opportunity to evaluate a wider range of organs, glands and tissues.

Thermography is affordable, accurate, and can save your life! Prevention and early detection are key to maintaining health and wellness.

.:: Weight Loss & Wellness Detox ::.

.:: B O D Y ::.
Why detox?

In our increasingly toxic world, we are exposed to toxins every day and a build-up can affect our neurological, immune and endocrine (hormone) systems. The most common offenders are air pollutionfood additivespesticidesalcoholcigarette smoke, heavy metals, processed food, pharmaceuticals and stress.

When large amounts of toxins are consumed over a long period of time, health issues arise. By following a detox diet you reduce the toxic load and enable the body to function more efficiently. Detoxing simply requires a little discipline and a fridge full of nourishing foods.

At Lipogenex, we offer a very affordable, easy to follow detox plan that consists of 3 full weeks of detoxing which includes weekly monitoring by Dr. Karampahtsis, IV Therapy for detox, B12 Shots, and select physician grade supplements for cleansing and heavy metal removal.
