Winter Skin Care
Taking Care of your skin in the winter...do's and dont's.
Much like changing the types of clothes we choose from summer to winter months, from baring it all in the summer to covering up in the winter; we must treat our skin care the same way. To prevent or heal dry, flaky skin we need moisture, but not just any type of moisture. We need to choose moisturizers that contain "good oils". Good oils are rich in antioxidants and omegas, they wont clog the pores or sit on the top layer of the skin, and give you that dewy glow. Some examples of "good oils" to look for are:
- avocado oil
- primrose oil
- grape seed oil
- almond oil
- argan oil
Stay away from shea or vegetable because they can clog pores and just rest on the top layer of the skin.
Cleansing, exfoliating, and SPF is ALWAYS a must, whether summer or winter, however, the choices of cleansers should be creamy, milky, or MILD foaming cleansers. The exfoliating process should be done with natural enzymes, such as pineapple or papaya. Stay away from harsh peels, scrubs, masks, and alcohol-based toners. Weekly exfoliation of dead skin will allow your serums and moisturizers to penetrate deeper. SPF is not just for the summer. Your skin should be protected with a broad spectrum and an SPF of 30 or more. All skin types and ages can get sun damage whether it be sunny, raining, or cloudy.
Lastly, some factors that can affect the skin that we may not always think of are your showers and your diet. As much as that steamy, hot shower feels good when its cold outside; the hot water is stripping your skin of its natural "good oils". Try to use lukewarm water and cut your shower time down. A healthy diet is key for good skin. Fruits and vegetables are your main source for antioxidants and vitamins. Some key fruits and vegetables are pomegranate, avocado, berries, broccoli, spinach, and peppers.
